Chapter Fifteen

“Everybody stops what they’re doing,” I say as Luke hangs on my every word, deep laughs bubbling out of him. “Talking, dancing, eating their slices of marble cake. They all stop, turn, and stare at me as champagne pours down my face and flows out of my hair. I was soaked. Champagne shot up my nose, which burns like crazy by the way, and it went into my eyes. They were bloodshot for three hours after. It was horrible.”

“I’m sorry to laugh,” he says as he unsuccessfully tries to hold it back. I don’t mind. I love the deep rumbling sound of it. “What did you do?”

“The show must go on,” I say with a chuckle. “I poured the two glasses of champagne, excused myself, got in my car, treated myself to a nice little scream session, and then I pulled myself together, went back in, grabbed the mop, and cleaned up my mess.”

We both laugh as we watch each other. He’s got such a nice smile. I don’t think I’d ever get sick of it.

“That’s a funny story,” he says as he wipes his eye.

“Yeah,” I answer, even though I never saw it that way before now. This is the first time I’ve laughed when I told it.

The waitress comes by and fills our wine glasses. She doesn’t spill a drop. Finally, a professional in here.

We’re finally getting a bit of a break from everyone now that we’re sitting at the head table for dinner. Everyone is focused on the guests at their tables, so I’m able to chat with Luke in privacy. People are still looking at us, but they can’t hear what we’re saying so we can be ourselves. It’s nice.

What’s even nicer is that my shoes are off under the table. I nearly moan as I rub my feet together. I’m going to hike up an active volcano after this just so I can throw them into molten lava and watch them die.

I had my father-bride dance which was terribly boring, which is good, I guess. Most of the guests didn’t bother to come inside to watch. It was a lot of awkward touching of Frank’s dandruff-dusted shoulders. His parmesan smell seems to be growing stronger and more fierce throughout the day. My cat would love him.

After the dance, DJ Brain Damage announced that it was time to get seated. I’m on full display at the head table along with the rest of the wedding party. It goes Owen, Ryan, Frank, Aya, me, Luke, Victoria, Kathleen, and then Walter at the far end.

Poor Aya is stuck next to Frank. I heard her ask him if he just ate a caesar salad. I should include her in our conversation, but I kind of want Luke all to myself. I should get to know him better. It’s easier to pretend we’re married that way. I am getting paid a lot of money for this, so it’s important to do the best job I can.

“It must be hard being an entrepreneur,” he says as he takes a sip of red wine.
